Choosing Between Bolster, Flat and Covered Beds
The fit notebook / 02
Start with the shape your companion already chooses: the edge of a cushion, an open patch of floor or a sheltered corner. Structure changes how a bed uses its footprint and how you will clean it.
Bolster beds: an edge to lean against.
Bolsters surround part or all of the resting surface. They are worth considering for a pet who curls up against furniture or rests their chin on an edge. Rim height and thickness differ, so compare the entry point and interior space as well as the overall size.
These beds may use several materials in one construction. A removable cover does not necessarily mean the filling can be washed. Check whether care instructions apply to the cover, cushion or entire bed.
Flat beds and mats: an open outline.
A mat leaves the sleeping surface open. This can suit a pet who sprawls or changes position frequently. The shape is also easy to compare with a clear floor area. If you plan to use a mat inside another space, measure that space directly rather than relying on a nominal size.
Look at thickness and surface texture. Some mats fold for storage; others are fuller cushions. An open form does not tell you whether a bed is machine washable, water resistant or suitable outdoors. Only rely on the details stated for that particular item.
Covered and cave beds: a sheltered corner.
A roof or hood gives a different feel to the resting space. Consider it for a pet who already chooses covered spots and can enter and leave comfortably. Floor measurements alone cannot establish fit: entrance size, roof height and internal room matter too.
Put the opening toward a clear path. Avoid forcing a pet into an enclosed bed or placing it where a door can strike it. Give your companion a chance to explore it at their own pace.
Raised beds: a supported surface.
A framed bed separates its resting fabric from the floor. Compare the complete frame footprint and the assembled height. Use a stable, level surface and follow the assembly instructions. Do not assume a weight capacity when one has not been specified.
For cleaning, treat fabric and frame separately unless the care directions say otherwise. Dry the surface fully, reattach it securely and inspect connectors before use.
Choose the care routine too.
Think about loose fur, muddy paws and how much drying space you have. Remove fur regularly and address spills promptly. Verify whether the bed has a removable cover and whether a stated wash method applies to every component. When machine washing is not specified, do not assume it is suitable.
No single structure is right for every pet. Compare their resting habit, your available space and the stated care method, then choose the bed that fits all three. Explore the collection or ask a question.
